Some of the most powerful teaching moments do not happen at a table. They happen on the living room floor, in the middle of a pile of toys, when nobody is trying very hard at all.
That is good news for tired parents. It means you do not need a special curriculum or a quiet hour to help your child grow. You need the play that is already happening, and a few small ways to shape it.
Follow Your Child's Lead
Watch what your child reaches for first. Maybe it is a bin of wooden animals or the same truck they always choose. Whatever it is, that interest is your starting point. When you join in on something your child already loves, they stay engaged longer, and engagement is where learning lives.
Sit close, get down on their level, and play the way they are playing. You are not there to redirect them yet. You are there to become part of the fun.
Turn One Toy Into A Conversation
Once your child is comfortable, you can gently add language and back-and-forth. Hold a toy up and wait. That pause gives your child a reason to reach for it or look up at you. When they do, hand it right over. That small exchange teaches something big: my communication works, and it gets me what I want.
You can stretch it a little each time. A look becomes a point. A point becomes a sound. A sound becomes a word. There is no rush and no script. You are simply following the openings your child gives you.
Keep It Short And Keep It Joyful
Play that teaches does not have to be long. A few good minutes beat a long session that ends in tears. Watch for the signs that your child is finished, and stop while it still feels good. That way play stays something they want to come back to.
The goal is never to turn play into work. It is to notice that play was already doing the work all along.
Where A BCBA Fits In
Every child is different, and what looks simple on paper can feel tricky in the moment. That is what caregiver coaching is for. A BCBA can watch how your child plays, help you spot the openings you might miss, and build a plan around the toys and routines that are already part of your day.
If any of this felt familiar, you are already closer than you think.
